Archive of Recorded Church Music
Великобритания
Добавлен 8 мар 2016
We seek to preserve this unique and priceless heritage of recordings from choirs of gentlemen and boys singing in the English Cathedral Tradition. The first gramophone record by a choir was issued in 1902 and the Archive (the largest of its kind in the world) collects recordings up to the present day.
We are delighted that the ArchivesofSound RUclips channel, which is dedicated to Barry Rose's time at Guildford Cathedral, is now under the aegis of the Archive of Record Church Music.
Our website gives comprehensive in-depth information about the Archive, together with a guide to our online presence.

"O come O come Emanuel" Worcester Cathedral, 1990 (Hunt)
A year after the consecration an anniversary celebration service was held in the cathedral, with the Warwickshire Symphony Orchestra performing, along with the organ in some pieces. Back then I was a flautist with the orchestra and it was a magnificent, awe-inspiring occasion, although the acoustic reflections from the glass end of the nave gave us some problems, despite the absorbing effect of the place being full to capacity! Did much the same for the Belgrade Theatre too - first civic theatre to be built in Britain after the Second World War.
Sang here with brother Willy Downes.
The words of the wonderful piece by Gibbons at 20:14 Drop, drop, slow tears, And bathe those beauteous feet Which brought from Heaven The news and Prince of Peace. Cease not, wet eyes, His mercy to entreat; To cry for vengeance Sin doth never cease. In your deep floods Drown all my faults and fears; Nor let His eye See sin, but through my tears.
What a courageous kind of tone color and so high spirited singing! Like a war cry burning the hearts of the soldiers! Bravissimo!!! TGBTG!!!
What's better than singing in Latin? Singing a round in Latin!
Psalm 66 In finem, in hymnis. Psalmus cantici David. 2 Deus misereatur nostri, et benedicat nobis; illuminet vultum suum super nos, et misereatur nostri: 3 ut cognoscamus in terra viam tuam, in omnibus gentibus salutare tuum. 4 Confiteantur tibi populi, Deus: confiteantur tibi populi omnes. 5 Laetentur et exsultent gentes, quoniam judicas populos in aequitate, et gentes in terra dirigis. 6 Confiteantur tibi populi, Deus: confiteantur tibi populi omnes. 7 Terra dedit fructum suum: benedicat nos Deus, Deus noster! 8 Benedicat nos Deus, et metuant eum omnes fines terrae.
Thank you ❤
The Parsons is at perfect tempo. There are some long phrases in there, but this, of all things, can not be rushed.
Just realised this was broadcast exactly 53 years ago today... we had the same Gospel reading at the Cathedral in Singapore today!
Purcell in G Minor is one of my favourite canticles (18:18)
Every piece is fantastic here! As per usual with Barry Rose!!
Colin, that was terrific! The tenor line in the Psalm ( . . for His mercies endure for ever") was incrdibly moving! Hope you are all well. We attend Bangor Cathedral but less as the poxy LgTB takes over!! Alan Newble
how very lovely ❤❤❤
Is that what Guildford Cathedral looked like before with a modern monstrosity?
no that is Cartmel Priory where the choir was visiting
The photo is of Cartmel Priory in Cumbria... not quite sure why it is on this video! Nothing was there before Guildford Cathedral was built... I personally quite like it as the last hurrah of English Cathedral building!
A friend of mine went there, think it's one of the more expensive schools.
"There are perhaps no more than a half dozen in the congregation to hear the magic of the sound."
Oh oh oh! 26:42, Malcolm, that's too FAST! But lovely nonetheless!
A glorious recording by a large cathedral choir on top form singing in one of the best places in the country to get the required sound. Will anyone, anywhere, top this? It will be tough! Many thanks.
Despite the volume distortions in the recording, one can clearly hear the amazing purity (especially in the quieter sections) and seemingly effortless power of those 1977 Southwell trebles, eg. at 16'30" and throughout the anthem too, starting at 30'13". Wonderful! Thank you for the upload.
Please help….the baritone soloist is….??
Treble is Mark Peterson and baritone is Richard Barnes
Saw Dr and Buffy tuther day…….and indeed Dr Rose conducted two Evensongs at Wells Cathedral. Still didn’t get it right…..
Rupert is absolutely and utterly ON FIRE with the play out…….best in show
PS have always thought that the altos sound lush
How absolutely wonderful this is.
Wonderful, creative registrations, and what powerful swell boxes! This was an awesome exchange between organ and choir, each supporting the other - thanks for sharing!
Thank you
I would have been sixteen here, but girls weren't allowed in Cathedral Choirs in those days. My musical background enabled me to learn how to play a musical instrument as well as sing. I also have perfect pitch - a gift that has been put to good use in a church choir (alto).
Thank you so very much for posting this recording.
Chants by George Elvey and Crotch. The psalms really skip along.
This is such high quality. I wonder if they swung any incense for this Festal Evensong!
All unconducted.
IF THIS IS A PARISH CHURCH, THEY SEEMED TO HAVE A VERY GOOD CHOIR.
It is a parish church with an outstanding choir. Those were the days when many parish church choirs were of cathedral standards.
Years ago, when many people were Christians, churches could attract talented people to their music programs. I remember some remarkable music at relatively small churches, but that was decades ago.
TOTALLY AGREE!!
The rendition of "Lead me Lord" at the end brought tears to my eyes. Sublime!
Thalben-Ball and the Temple Church choir were a match made in heaven. We shall not hear their like again.
i used to do bell ringing for a while here! 😊🔔
A remarkable survival, this piece.
This is amazing, I've never heard this piece before Bless whoever had the foresight to record this off the radio in 1958 so we could enjoy in 2024!!!
I used to watch everything he did. His voice was mesmerising and his programmes were full of interest. There is so much noise these days.
This is a beautiful service, and an amazingly good quality recording.
This whole concert has a beautiful classic Christmas vibe. Why don’t they do it like this anymore it’s perfect and classy
Rubbra - WHY is this great piece not better known...?!!
I remember the excitement when John Craven arrived at the school.
Very good selection. And that young fellow is now 67!
I attended the Choir School and left as Head Boy and my name is still on the Head Boy's board
Pure beauty.
Chants are by Thomas Attwood Walmisley and Sir John Goss.
Chants to the Psalms are Psalm 93 - Sir Joseph Barnby. Psalm 94 vv. 1 - 17 William Woodcock vv. 18 - end William Crotch
One of the finest musicians and lovely people it was ever my privilege and joy to know. RIP JGS.
FABULOUS
Choral Evensong in the true sense of the word. So lovely to hear it.
Wonderful to see Charles Daniels, Gerry Finley and John Butt all starting out amazing careers at King’s
This is vintage Howells, especially the second part is stunning and breathtaking. Howells at his best.
